CCW Sensitive Areas (May v Bonta) Filed 9/12/2023 in US District Court
This challenge seeks to eliminate so called sensitive areas where CCW permit holders are not allowed to carry their firearms as introduced by SB-2 on 1/1/2024
Status:
9/6/2024 3 Judge panel issued order eliminating some sensitive areas and upholding others. Most notably, the requirement that a private business must post a sign allowing concealed carriers to enter has been eliminated.
On 9/19/2024 CRPA filed a petition to be reheard by an “en banc” group of 11 judges. Currently waiting for an oral arguments date.

11 % Excise Tax (Jaymes vs Maduros) Filed 7/2/2024 in San Diego County Superior Court
This case seeks to repeal California’s unconstitutional 11% excise tax on firearms, firearms parts and ammunition introduced by AB-28 on 7/1/2024

Magazine Ban (Duncan vs Bercerra) Filed 7/28/2017 US Court of Appeals 9th Circuit
This case challenges California’s ban on magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition
Status:
Declared unconstitutional on 9/22/2023 which led to magazine “freedom week”.
AG Bonta filed for an emergency stay which was granted on 10/10/2023 which put the law back into effect.
This case is currently being held up indefinitely by the 9th Circuit pending the outcome of other cases before the US Supreme Court.

Handgun Roster (Boland vs Bonta) Filed 8/1/2022 US District Court
Seeks to eliminate the restrictions put in place by California’s Unsafe Handgun Act which requires that every handgun be drop tested and possess three “safety features”; a loaded chamber indicator, a magazine disconnect and that fired cases are “micro-stamped” with a marking that is unique to each gun.
Status:
3/20/2023 – Order grants preliminary injunction by concluding that all three requirements are unconstitutional.
3/27/2023 – California appeals decision and the loaded chamber indicator and magazine disconnect requirements are reinstated. Micro-stamping is not appealed and is no longer required to get a handgun approved for the roster.
3/25/2024 - Case is being held pending the en banc decision in Duncan vs Bonta

Ammunition Background Checks (Rhode v. Becerra) Filed 4/26/2018 US District Court
Case seeks to eliminate California law that requires citizens to pay for and successful pass a background check every time they wish to purchase ammunition.
Status:
1/31/2024 – Order granting injunction blocking State from enforcing this law. State appealed decision the same day and was granted a stay of this decision on 2/5/2024

Assault Weapon Ban (Rupp vs Bercerra) Filed 4/24/2017 with the US District Court
This case seeks to eliminate the law banning certain common features on magazine fed, semi-automatic rifles.
Status:
7/31/2019 Order in favor of the state.
8/27/2019 CRPA filed an appeal to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals
6/28/2022 Court of Appeals sent the case back to the District Court for reconsideration in light of the Bruen decision.
3/25/2024 Judgement in favor of the State
8/22/2024 CRPA files a new appeal with the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals

Gun Show Ban on State Property (B & L Productions v. Newsom) Filed 10/4/2021 in US District Court
This case challenges the law banning the sale of firearms, parts and ammunition on all State property, including fairgrounds.
Status:
6/11/2024 Ruling in favor of the State to take affect 9/25/2024.
6/25/2024 Appeal filed to an en banc panel
